A Different Perspective
The Big Picture
Stood at the top of the Empire State Building (have I mentioned I went to New York?) you feel like you can see the whole city. The cars look like toys on a track and the people are barely visible. You can see the tops of all the other buildings, the roof gardens, the terraces, the water towers. The H&M (that sign seems to figure heavily in the NY skyline from all angles), the rivers and the bridges and the famous Central Park.
You get the big picture. It’s a lot to take in!
You can see some detail, but only if you look closely.
Of course, each side of the tower offers a different view, so it is broken down into smaller chunks to be enjoyed.
It’s a whole different world to the one on the ground. When you are down there, experiencing the city from the human level you see the individual details; the street vendors to the amazing doorways, the windows, the people of New York (and the rest of the world). The people living on the streets, the dirt, the sounds of the horns beeping and the general traffic, music and chatter, the smells and the draft of aircon as you pass a shop door. From this level you get the whole immersion of all the senses, it can be overwhelming and intense but what an experience!
It’s important when wandering around New York to look up. When you look up, you see so much more than just your feet.
Meta Position - Look down, Look up, Look Forward
This is a bit like life. We often wander around looking at our feet, not seeing the glorious detail around us. It's easy to forget to look at ourselves from above, living our lives (this is called the Meta position in NLP and probably why the FB parent group adopted this name).
When we are on the top of the Empire State Building, we are in Meta Position. We are looking down on the big picture from above, seeing all there is to see.
When we are on the streets looking up, we are in the experience noticing the details.
When we are looking at our feet, we are being very careful of our steps, being sure not to put a foot wrong but not taking in the full experience.
It’s helpful to look from all angles when setting goals for the future . Taking the top view of the big picture, breaking it down and looking at the details and then working out the first steps to take in the direction we want to go in. It requires looking up, looking down and looking forward.
When you are in the midst of a relationship breaking down, we are often looking at our feet, trying to tread carefully, too scared to look up and see the detail, afraid of what might be there. You can also get so absorbed with your own place in the story that you forget to look down at the big picture.
Feeling Stuck, Lost and Unsure
This leaves you stuck, lost and unsure of where to go. Looking at our feet when we are trying to just get by can result in going around in circles or walking in a direction that doesn’t suit you because you cannot face looking up.
It is also common to spend all your time looking backward.
The what ifs and if onlys.
I help my clients look from all the viewpoints. It can be hard to do this on your own. We put our filters in place and we remain unchallenged. We live the life we think we deserve in that moment and you are so close to the details it can be hard to see where you are going.
If you were to imagine yourself at the top of a tall building, looking down on your life, what would you see?
If you had a CCTV recording of what you were saying to yourself and those around you, what would you be hearing?
If you were to look up, what are you missing by staring at your feet?
What is stopping you looking up at the details, or at the bigger picture?
If you are putting off your life because your relationship ended and you don't know who you are anymore, join my Free Facebook Group.
If you want to know how you can work with me to find out who you are and what you want from your life and relationships, the best way is to book a Free Introductory Call.
How can an Introductory Call benefit me?
I know (as someone with introvert tendencies), having a call may feel like the last thing in the world you would want to do. I know that feeling of staring at the phone thinking, I really want to do something but this feels very scary. In all honesty, I still feel the same for a second when the phone starts to ring!
The reason it is important is that we need to know if we want to work with each other. This works 2 ways.
Building a relationship where you feel confident enough to tackle some deep issues with me starts here. Before you part with any money, before you commit to 3, 6 or 12 months deep work, we both need to know it's the right thing for you.
Because I understand how hard it is, booking the introductory call via the website creates the whole initial link. You get the meeting time you want, you receive the zoom link and reminders and then, when the time comes, we have an informal chat about what you want out of all of this. I will guide you the whole way and during this first call, we will already begin to design the life you want.
