I absolutely hate receiving compliments!

Is this something you say?

My daughter said it to me last night. She said she has no idea how to respond. I said, just say “thank you”. She looked at me as if I had 2 heads.

I get it, I really do.

2 years ago in Zumba, a lady said to me, “you have such a lovely figure, your waist is so tiny!” I proceeded to tell her all the things I did not like about my body. She replied with “just say thank you”.

It stuck with me, and I have been practicing it ever since.

Today, a contact I respect highly told me I am great at what I do. I smiled and said, “thank you”.

I still have a slight niggle that this comes across as conceited, but I decided, what the heck, does it even matter?

No, it doesn’t.

I love what I do, and if that makes me great, Fabulous! Who am I to argue?

Eventually I came downstairs, popped my head in my daughter’s room and said, “next time someone tells you, you are pretty, just say – I know, I get it from my mum”. She was absolutely horrified at that suggestion!

Isn’t it strange how we find receiving compliments so difficult? Hearing someone tell us something great about us can feel almost….traumatic. That sweaty feeling, the searching your brain for how to respond, the anxiety!

Questions to ask are:

  • Do I respect this person?

  • How would I like someone to respond to me if I gave them a compliment?

  • How do I sound to the other person when I brush it off?

Maybe I am actually THAT awesome!

So, tell me, what do you say when you receive a compliment?

How does it make you feel?

What great things would you like to say about yourself but don’t quite believe, yet?

If you would like to feel confident in the way others see you, but more importantly how you see yourself, you can make big changes.

When you learn to simply say “thank you”, your subconscious listens.
