I love the theatre - how to build your fairytale...
That thrill when the curtain goes up and the first words are spoken.
I particularly love musical theatre. The sound of the orchestra from the pit, that full bodied sounds that makes your hairs stand on end.
The lights, often not consciously noticed but without which, the whole performance wouldn't work.
The last few weeks have been the start of panto season and I have been lucky enough to work in the theatre on my planning while watching a production being built from the ground up.
An empty space being built up into a fantasy world.
Ropes, fabric, wooden panels, boxes of electrical equipment and miles of cable all steadily moving into place.
What started as a mass of separate parts, starts to create a picture.
When we go to the theatre, we see the final result. We don't see the technicians building the set up. We don't see the lighting team working out where each spotlight goes, how bright they are, what colours; we also don't see the hours of planning before they even get near a theatre and how to take someone's imagination, and create a reality. We don't hear the sound guys saying 1-2-1-2 to get the balance exactly right for the best experience for the audience.
When all we see is the finished result, we can be forgiven for thinking it is easy, that it takes no time at all, that it's all just in place by some magical fairy godmother waving their wand.
That's the same as success. When we see the success of those around us, we don't see the planning, the visualising, the resources, the obstacles that have to be climbed and the challenges navigated.
So, when you see people living a life you would love, ask yourself,
How did they get there?
What could I start doing to get where I want to be?
What support do I need?
How much do I want it?
