The meaning of Christmas, to me...
It’s the time of year again. The one where I put a 7ft real tree in my living room.
When my lovely dog was here, she would appear very confused about this tradition, wondering why on earth a tree ends up in the house.
Trees mean different things to different people. Some have them up in November, some have them down on Boxing Day, some have artificial. There are small, medium and large. Minimalist, black, white, even upside down. Different coloured lights, all white lights, some chase and others are still. Each tree has its own personality. I’m sure you can tell a family’s personality by the tree they have.
My tree is the most precious thing I own. Not the tree itself, but the hundreds of decorations collected over the last 43 years. I have my first Christmas ornament and every year after. I have the ones I bought my own daughters that will be passed down to them when they leave home.
Each decoration is like an old friend to me, or a brand shiny new one with new memories to start.
It isn’t just a box of decorations to me. It’s my whole history.
There are very few “things” I would worry about losing, but they are on the top of the list.
I sit next to my tree for a few weeks of the year, I move the ornaments around when I see a better spot and I remember where they come from. Each one holds a memory that fills my soul. I look forward to taking them out every year and revisiting all the wonderful memories of Christmases past and those to come. I also have my favourites, they take pride of place at the top and front. Then there are those I’m not so bothered about. Generally they are getting a bit tired or I can’t remember their story. They go to the back. They still have an important part to play, but I don’t focus on them.
Christmas is all about nostalgia, tradition, family and togetherness for me.
I know for some it is filled with sadness of what has been lost or never had.
Whether you believe in the Christmas Story or not (I love the story but see it as that), it is also a time to remember that there was hope that a boy born in a stable could become a king. He fulfilled a destiny set out for him. There was a goal from birth. He was to become the saviour of the world and die on the cross. His life was designed for him, and he chose to follow the expectations had of him.
